Sea Shanties and the price of coal
The festival was a fantastic two day event on the Yarmouth Pier. They do love their sea shanties down there! A few Lewis sailors songs in the mix this year. Onboard the Lydia Eva a working steam drifter, build in 1930, which came to the west coast for the herring fishing. The coal they are using on the Lydia Eva is currently £300.00 a tonne. In 1937 the total cost of coal, for the Sy Drifter the Windfall, for the Yarmouth season, from 30/09/37 to 20/11/1937 was £165.14s. Coal was 38s/6d the ton!.
